Suspended after adding your city or service to your business name? Google's name rule, in its own words

"Joe's Plumbing - 24/7 Emergency Plumber Philadelphia" looks like smart marketing. On Google Business Profile it is one of the most common reasons a profile gets suspended, and it is one of the easiest to fix.

What Google says

The guidelines start from one idea:

"Your name should reflect your business’s real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers."

Then they say what happens if you add more:

"Including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile."

Google lists what does not belong in the name. Under "Your name must not include:" the list has eleven items, among them:

  • "Marketing taglines"
  • "Business hours information"
  • "Phone numbers or website URL’s"
  • "Service or product information"
  • "Location information"

Google gives examples. Not acceptable: "Midas Auto Service Experts". Acceptable: "Midas". Not acceptable: "Airport Direct 1-888-557-8953". Acceptable: "Airport Direct".

What this means for a local trade

If your sign, truck, invoices, and website all say "Joe's Plumbing", the profile name is "Joe's Plumbing". The city, "24/7", "Emergency", "Best", and your phone number come out.

What Google does not say: the guidelines do not ban every city or service word. A name is acceptable when it is your real name, used the same way on your storefront, website, and stationery. Google's own acceptable examples include "Advance Auto Parts" and "1-800-Got-Junk". The test is not "does it contain a keyword" but "is this the name customers actually know you by". If you are not sure which side you are on, that is exactly the question to settle before you appeal.

What to do, in order

  1. Fix the name first. Change it to the name on your real-world signage and paperwork. Google's appeals page: "Make sure your profile follows all the guidelines."
  2. Do not open a new profile. "Important: Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business."
  3. Gather proof of the real name. Google lists evidence that can help: "Official business registration", "A business license", "Tax certificates", and "Utility bills for the business". The name on them should match the corrected profile name.
  4. Appeal once, carefully. "Note: Appeals can only be submitted once." Say plainly what you changed and attach the documents.

To be honest about the limits: Google's wording is "could result in" a suspension. A name with extra words is a likely cause, not a certain one, and fixing it does not guarantee reinstatement.
